Decisions from these courts are checked against our own copy, with no one else involved. On the brief checker, a case citation outside them is passed to CourtListener as the volume, reporter and page alone.

^* The source data for these district courts stops between 2017 and 2019. A later district decision is not in our copy of the case law however it's cited. Some later federal decisions can be searched and read by docket number and date instead, from the opinions courts send to GovInfo — the “Federal opinions by docket” row above lists the courts we actually hold that way, and it is the only thing on this page that says so. Sending to GovInfo is voluntary and uneven, and no court’s absence there means its decisions do not exist: of the Seventh Circuit’s districts, N.D. Ill. sent until early 2024 and S.D. Ill., S.D. Ind. and W.D. Wis. still do, while C.D. Ill., N.D. Ind. and E.D. Wis. never have. S.D.N.Y. and C.D. Cal. send nothing at all, and neither does the D.C. Circuit.

• Not heldThe courts of every other state, and most state trial courts. Of the states, we hold the appellate decisions of Illinois, California, Texas, Ohio and New York, and some of New York's trial courts. The states are listed one by one under Next.
• Not heldVery recent and unpublished decisions are thin in every source, including ours. The exception is Illinois: its Supreme Court and Appellate Court opinions and Rule 23 orders are read daily from the courts' own feeds, from September 4, 2026 for the Appellate Court. Anything filed between our snapshot and then is not held yet.

Statutes, regulations and the Federal Register

Checked against our own copies, with no third party involved at all. What leaves your browser is the title and section, never the subsection or anything around it.

• United States Code — every title, at the release point in the table above. Where the Code itself carries two sections under one number, both are shown.
• Code of Federal Regulations — every title.
• Federal Register — every document since January 2015. A pincite inside a document resolves to the document it falls in, and says so.

Federal rules

The national rules, from the appendix titles of the US Code. A rule that has been abrogated or reserved is kept and marked no longer in force, so an old citation tells you it's gone rather than finding nothing. A bare "Rule 12" is never checked, because which set it means can't be known from the citation.

Local rules for every federal court of appeals, district court and bankruptcy court, the rules of the Illinois courts, and California's statewide rules — the Rules of Court, the Standards of Judicial Administration and the Rules of Professional Conduct — each read from the court's or the State Bar's own website. A court rule is checked only when the citation names the court, as in N.D. Ill. L.R. 56.1; a bare "Local Rule 5.2" is never assigned to one. Judges' standing orders are not read.

What stands in the way for each is that work, done state by state. None has a date.

The Georgia Rules of Professional Conduct are published one page per rule, which we haven't read yet. The Court of Appeals' own rules are held.
• Not heldNorth Carolina's court rules. The North Carolina courts' website refuses requests from our reader outright, and we don't get around that. The Rules of Professional Conduct are published by the State Bar one page per rule, which we haven't read yet.

Minnesota's appellate decisions are not in our case-law copy yet, and the Adoption rules, the Court of Appeals' special rules, the records-access rules, the district courts' special rules, the Sentencing Guidelines and the bar admission, CLE and judicial standards rules are not held.

The Oregon Rules of Civil Procedure and the Evidence Code are statutes.

The Hawaiʻi Rules of Evidence are a statute.

Twelve chapters are held: the State Bar, lawyer regulation, CLE, bar admission, the Code of Judicial Conduct, judicial administration, court records, publication of opinions, appointed counsel's compensation and the adoption of rules. The Rules of Professional Conduct (chapter 20) are not held because the court's copy answered with a server error, and the other chapters are not held yet. Wisconsin's civil, criminal and appellate procedure and its evidence rules are statutes. Wisconsin's appellate decisions are not in our case-law copy yet.

The Rules of Civil, Unified Criminal, Appellate, Probate and Small Claims Procedure, the Rules of Evidence, the Rules of Electronic Court Systems, the Code of Judicial Conduct, the Rules of Professional Conduct, the Maine Bar Rules, the Bar Admission Rules and the Rules for Guardians ad Litem are held. Maine's decisions are not in our case-law copy yet; the Rules of Evidence are the 2018 consolidation, and the amendment effective October 14, 2025 is not folded in; and the rules for the Committee on Judicial Conduct, the Maine Assistance Program and the Lawyers' Fund for Client Protection, the administrative orders and the standing orders are not held.

The Rules of Civil, Criminal, Appellate, Juvenile, Small Claims and Business and Chancery Court Procedure, the Rules of Evidence, the court-annexed ADR rules, the Code of Judicial Administration, the Code of Judicial Conduct, the Rules of Professional Conduct and chapters 1, 4 and 5 of the Supreme Court Rules of Professional Practice are held. Utah's decisions are not in our case-law copy yet; advisory committee notes are not held; and a citation using the former numbering of the Rules of Professional Practice (14-802 for 4-802) is not recognised.

Seventeen rule sets are held, among them the district, magistrate and metropolitan court civil and criminal rules, the Children's Court, Evidence and Appellate rules, the Rules of Professional Conduct, the Code of Judicial Conduct and the Supreme Court General Rules, as the New Mexico Compilation Commission publishes them. New Mexico's decisions are not in our case-law copy yet; the committee commentary and the case annotations are not held; and the forms, the Uniform Jury Instructions and the judicial districts' local rules are not held.

The Idaho Rules of Civil and Family Law Procedure, the Criminal, Misdemeanor Criminal, Infraction, Juvenile and Appellate Rules, the Rules of Evidence, the Court Administrative Rules, the e-filing, small claims and treatment court rules and the Idaho Rules of Professional Conduct are held. Idaho's decisions are not in our case-law copy yet, and the Idaho Bar Commission Rules and the Code of Judicial Conduct are not held.
• Not heldMontana case law, and some of Montana's rules. The Montana Rules of Civil and Appellate Procedure, the Rules of Evidence, the Code of Judicial Conduct, the Rules of Professional Conduct and the justice and city courts' rules are held. Montana's decisions are not in our case-law copy yet; the Uniform District Court Rules are not held, because the court's copy is a scan with almost no text and we don't use OCR; and the admission, discipline, disqualification and substitution, water court and Workers' Compensation Court rules are not held.
• Not heldWyoming case law, and some of Wyoming's rules. The Wyoming Rules of Civil, Criminal, Appellate and Disciplinary Procedure, the Rules of Evidence, the Uniform Rules for District and Circuit Courts, the circuit courts' civil rules, the juvenile court rules, the Code of Judicial Conduct, the Rules of Professional Conduct and the Rules of the Supreme Court are held, without the annotations and comments the court's copies carry. Wyoming's decisions are not in our case-law copy yet, and the fees, e-filing, records-access, chancery, bar and admission rules are not held.
• Not heldArkansas case law, and some of Arkansas's rules. The Rules of Civil and Criminal Procedure, the Rules of Evidence, both sets of Rules of Appellate Procedure, the Rules of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, the District Court Rules, the Rules of Professional Conduct and the Code of Judicial Conduct are held. Arkansas's decisions are not in our case-law copy yet; the Reporter's Notes are not held; and the admission, attorney discipline, CLE and judicial discipline rules and the administrative orders are not held.
• Not heldNorth Dakota's and Nebraska's court rules. Both states' courts publish their rules one rule or one section per page, a thousand requests where a set published as one document takes a dozen, and we haven't read them that way.
• Not heldKansas's court rules. The Kansas courts' website answers our reader with Forbidden, and we don't get around that.
• Not heldOklahoma's court rules. They are published on the Oklahoma State Courts Network, whose robots.txt asks every automated reader not to read any of it, and we honour that.
• Not heldTennessee's court rules. The Tennessee courts' website answers every request from our reader, robots.txt included, with a browser check that needs JavaScript, and we don't get around that. The Board of Professional Responsibility's website refuses our reader too.
• Not heldMissouri's court rules. The Missouri courts' robots.txt says that access to any Missouri judicial website by a site data scraper or similar automated software is expressly prohibited, and we honour that.
• Not heldMassachusetts's court rules. The Massachusetts Rules of Court are published on mass.gov, which answers our reader with Not allowed, robots.txt included, and we don't get around that.
• Not heldKentucky's court rules. We found no complete copy on the Kentucky courts' own website, and the complete copies we found are hosted on Westlaw; we read rules only from a court's own website. The Supreme Court of Kentucky publishes its orders amending the rules, not the rules as amended.

What we won't add

• Won't addA citator — anything that says a case is still good law, or how later courts treated it.
• Won't addPACER. It charges per page, and nothing here asks a question a docket filing would answer.
• Won't addRules we would have to read by OCR. A misread digit in a rule number is a confident wrong answer.
